There are multiple and varied reasons to explain why international exams are a significant part of our English programme. To begin with, setting a test as a personal goal is highly motivating. This kind of experience prepares students for future life, in both their schooling and their work life later. We are fully convinced that both the preparation itself and the instance of taking the exam are highly formative for the child’s own learning development as a student. Getting ready for these exams demand a long-term preparation period and a strong commitment on the part of the student. Secondly, international exams generate a safe system in which students can experience an instance of examination with a level of formality which is different from the ones they have met. As the result of the exam does not affect promotion, it is an ideal situation for them to forge their own experience along the path of examination taking. Furthermore, international exams are completely different from the kind of tests students are regularly exposed to because they assess language competence globally, thus presenting an interesting challenge. In addition, international exams are a clear, objective way to describe language skills that everyone can agree on because each represents a specific level of English. These levels of English competence are described in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which breaks the language learning into different levels that move up the scale from a very basic level up to advanced. There are many exams for different ages and stages of learning and that’s why at Arlene Fern we have decided to sit for exams that belong to different organizations and universities, hence exposing our students to different dynamics and styles. The Cambridge exams give the students the confidence to communicate in English in all 4 skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. On the other hand, the Trinity College examinations provide the students with a 5th ability they need to master: the skill of interaction. Besides, it also offers a very inclusive approach to assessment as there is a level for every learner according to their possibilities. Lastly, the skills and structures involved in each exam are part of our school syllabus and all our students are expected to acquire the abilities required for each level. Additionally, this compels teachers to focus and practise all 5 skills during the lessons and through the different subjects taught in English, as it is not only about what students know about the language but also what they can do with it. To conclude, there are many arguments that support our belief that taking international exams plays an important role in the students’ own learning development. On the one hand, the motivation to foster our students’ competence in the use of the language. On the other, the conviction that this kind of experience enhances autonomy and commitment, as well as the awareness of the students’ own learning process and the confidence to face different challenges that will surely arise all along their lives as students and members of society. And we are proud to say that our students are ready to face this challenge in terms of language as well as attitude. In 2018, 96% of our 4th form students succeded in the YLE Movers and 100% of our 5th formers passed the Trinity College Exam. We are also very pleased to say that 50% of the 6th form and 7th form students who sat for Ket for Schools and Pet for Schools respectively, passed the exam with Merit or Distinction. Hay varias razones para explicar por qué los exámenes internacionales forman parte de nuestro programa de inglés en Arlene Fern. Para comenzar, proponerse el objetivo personal de rendir un examen es muy motivador. Este tipo de experiencias prepara al alumno/a para su vida futura tanto escolar como laboral más adelante. Estamos convencidos de que tanto el período de preparación en sí misma como la instancia de examen son momentos formativos para el alumno en su construcción como estudiante. Rendir estos exámenes demanda una preparación a largo plazo y un compromiso importante de parte del alumno/a. Por otro lado, los exámenes internacionales proveen un sistema seguro para que los alumnos/as vivencien una instancia de evaluación con un nivel de formalidad que es muy diferente a aquellos que ya conocen. Como su resultado no afecta la promoción de grado, proporcionan una oportunidad ideal para que recorran su propia experiencia en el camino de los exámenes. Además son completamente diferentes del tipo de pruebas que ellos conocen porque evalúan la competencia y habilidades idiomáticas globalmente, ofreciendo así un desafío interesante. Es importante mencionar que los exámenes internacionales son un medio claro y objetivo de describir habilidades lingüísticas ya que cada uno de ellos representa un nivel específico de inglés. Estos niveles de competencia están descritos en el Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), un marco que divide al aprendizaje del idioma en diferentes niveles desde el más básico al más avanzado. Hay muchos exámenes destinados a diferentes franjas etarias y etapas de aprendizaje. Es por esto que en Arlene Fern hemos decidido rendir exámenes que brindan diferentes organizaciones y universidades y así exponer a nuestros alumnos/as a variadas dinámicas y estilos. Los exámenes de Cambridge ofrecen a los estudiantes la seguridad de comunicarse en inglés en las 4 habilidades: comprensión lectora, comprensión auditiva, oralidad y escritura. Los exámenes de Trinity College a su vez, los desafían en una 5ta habilidad que necesitan manejar: la interacción. Por otro lado, también nos ofrece un enfoque más inclusivo en este tipo de evaluaciones ya que existe un examen con un nivel óptimo de desafío para cada alumno/a de acuerdo a sus posibilidades. Por último, las habilidades y estructuras que corresponden a cada examen forman parte de nuestra currícula y se espera que todos nuestros alumnos/as adquieran aquellas estipuladas para cada nivel. Además, estos contenidos obligan a nuestros maestros/as a focalizar y practicar estas 5 habilidades en sus clases a través de las diferentes materias dictadas en inglés, ya que no se trata solamente de lo que los alumnos/as saben acerca del idioma sino lo que pueden hacer con él. Finalmente, entendemos que rendir exámenes internacionales juegan un papel fundamental en la formación de los alumnos/as como estudiantes. Por un lado, la motivación que generan para desarrollar la competencia idiomática en nuestro alumnado. Por el otro, el convencimiento que este tipo de experiencias alienta la autonomía y el compromiso, así como el conocimiento de cada alumno/a acerca de su propio proceso de aprendizaje y la confianza para enfrentar futuros desafíos que encontrarán a lo largo de sus vidas, como estudiantes y miembros de una sociedad. Y con orgullo podemos decir que nuestros alumnos están preparados para enfrentar este reto, tanto idiomática como actitudinalmente. En el 2018 tuvimos de 100% aprobados en Trinity College Exam realizado por 5to Grado y 96% de aprobados en Movers que se aplica a 4to Grado. 49% de nuestros alumnos de 6TO Grado que realizaron la prueba Ket pasaron con Merit o Distinction y en 7mo Grado el 50% de los aprobados pasaron con Merit o Distinción en PET.
